Tearing instability in relativistic magnetically dominated plasmas
Many astrophysical sources of high energy emission, such as black hole magnetospheres, superstrongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), and probably relativistic jets in Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma Ray Bursts involve relativistically magnetically dominated plasma. In such plasma the energy density of magnetic field greatly exceeds the thermal and the rest mass energy density of particle...
متن کاملResistive tearing instability with equilibrium shear flow
The effect of equilibrium velocity shear on the resistive tearing instability has been systematically studied, using the boundary layer approach. Both the "constant-f/!" tearing mode, which has a growth rate that scales as S -3/5, and the "nonconstant-f/!" tearing mode [a' (as) -1/3» 1], which has a growth rate that scales as S -1/3, are analyzed in the presence of flow. Here S is the usual rat...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Critical Percolation
We use SLE6 paths to construct a process of continuum nonsimple loops in the plane and prove that this process coincides with the full continuum scaling limit of 2D critical site percolation on the triangular lattice – that is, the scaling limit of the set of all interfaces between different clusters. Some properties of the loop process, including conformal invariance, are also proved. In the m...
متن کاملCritical exponents for two-dimensional percolation
We show how to combine Kesten’s scaling relations, the determination of critical exponents associated to the stochastic Loewner evolution process by Lawler, Schramm, and Werner, and Smirnov’s proof of Cardy’s formula, in order to determine the existence and value of critical exponents associated to percolation on the triangular lattice.
متن کاملTwo-dimensional modulational instability in photorefractive media
We study theoretically and experimentally the modulational instability of broad optical beams in photorefractive nonlinear media. The angular dependence of the growth rate of periodic perturbations is calculated. Our findings are confirmed by experimental measurements on a strontium barium niobate photorefractive crystal.
